How to Prepare Your Campervan for Winter: The Essential UK Checklist
Winter doesn't have to mean the end of campervan adventures. From peaceful countryside escapes to cosy evenings parked up somewhere beautiful, there's plenty to enjoy about travelling during the colder months.

However, British winters can be tough on campervans. Freezing temperatures, heavy rain and damp conditions can cause problems if your van isn't properly prepared.
Whether you're planning winter road trips or storing your VW Transporter until spring, here's our essential campervan winter preparation UK checklist to help keep your van protected and ready for the season.
Protect Your Water System from Freezing
Frozen water can damage pipes, pumps and tanks, leading to expensive repairs.
If you're not using your campervan regularly during winter:
Drain the fresh and waste water tanks.
Empty taps, pipes and pumps according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Remove portable water containers.
Check exposed pipework for damage.
Top tip: Even small amounts of trapped water can freeze, so make sure the entire system is properly drained before temperatures drop below zero.
Check Your Leisure Battery
Shorter days, colder temperatures and increased use of heating and lighting can put extra pressure on your campervan's electrical system.
Before winter arrives, check your leisure battery's condition, test your charging system and make sure your solar panels are clean.
If you have a lithium battery, remember that many models cannot safely charge below 0°C without suitable protection.
For more advice, read our Campervan Leisure Batteries in Winter guide.
Make Sure Your Heating Works
There's nothing better than stepping into a warm campervan after a chilly winter walk.
If your van has a diesel heater, test it before your next trip. Check that it starts correctly, produces warm air and has no unusual noises or error messages.
Make sure air vents remain unobstructed, and your carbon monoxide alarm is working.

Prevent Condensation and Damp
Condensation is one of the biggest challenges of winter campervan travel.
Warm air inside the van meets cold windows and surfaces, creating moisture that can eventually lead to mould.
To help prevent this:
Keep your campervan well ventilated.
Use heating alongside ventilation.
Wipe condensation from windows.
Avoid drying wet clothes inside.
Keep bedding and storage areas dry.
Good insulation also helps reduce cold spots, making the interior more comfortable.
We've covered this in more detail in our Campervan Condensation UK guide.
Inspect Seals, Windows and Your Pop-Top Roof
Heavy rain and strong winds can expose small leaks that go unnoticed during summer.
Check door seals, windows, roof vents and pop-top canvas for signs of damage.
If your campervan has a pop-top roof, avoid leaving the canvas packed away wet. Open it to dry thoroughly when conditions allow.
Thermal pop-top covers and window blinds can also help reduce heat loss during colder nights.
Don't Forget Winter Vehicle Maintenance
Your campervan needs the same winter checks as any other vehicle.
Before setting off, make sure you:
Check tyre pressures and tread depth.
Top up antifreeze and winter screenwash.
Test your lights and windscreen wipers.
Check the starter battery.
Keep servicing and MOT checks up to date.
If you're planning trips to colder or mountainous areas, consider whether all-season or winter tyres would be suitable.
Storing Your Campervan Until Spring?
If you're taking a break from van life during winter, a little preparation will help prevent problems when you return.
Clean and dry the interior, remove food and damp belongings, drain the water system and maintain your batteries according to their manufacturers' instructions.
Choose a secure, well-drained parking location and check the van periodically for leaks, damp or pest activity.

Drained or protected your water system.
