Why October half-term is made for a campervan

Summer gets all the attention, but autumn is when a campervan really earns its keep. The crowds thin out, the hills turn gold and copper, and there is nothing better than shutting the door on a cold evening with the heater ticking over and a brew on.

Quieter roads, better colours, cosier nights. Here's how to make the most of it.

For most schools in England, October half-term 2026 runs from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October. Scotland, Wales and some academies break up on different dates, so check your own school calendar before you book anything. One more thing worth knowing: the clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, so you start the week with noticeably darker evenings.

Four autumn routes that work brilliantly in a campervan

1. The Peak District: Dovedale, Hathersage and the Hope Valley

It's on our doorstep here in Derby, so we're biased, but the Peaks in autumn are hard to beat. Walk the stepping stones at Dovedale, climb up to Stanage Edge for sunset, then drop into Castleton for a pub tea. Distances are short, which matters when daylight runs out by late afternoon.

2. The Yorkshire Dales: Malham, Settle and Ribblehead

Malham Cove and Gordale Scar look even more dramatic under autumn skies, and the drive over to Ribblehead Viaduct is a proper road trip in itself. We covered a similar loop in our early spring road trip guide, and almost all of it works just as well in October.

3. The Northumberland coast: Bamburgh, Holy Island and Alnwick

Big skies, empty beaches and castles around every corner. If you head over to Holy Island, check the causeway tide times before you set off. People get caught out every year, and a campervan is not a boat.

4. Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons)

Set the van up for cold, damp nights

Autumn weather is changeable, so a little preparation makes the difference between a cosy trip and a soggy one. Here's what we'd sort before you go:

• Heating that works without hook-up. A diesel heater is the gold standard for autumn trips. Our diesel heater guide explains how they work and how to run one safely.

• Thermal screens for the cab windows. They keep heat in and condensation off the glass.

• A proper winter duvet or a sleeping bag rated for low single figures.

• A dry bag or boot box for wet coats and muddy walking boots, so the living space stays dry.

Where to stay overnight in late October

Plenty of campsites close for the season at the end of October, and the ones that stay open get busy over half-term. Book ahead where you can. Plan your driving around the daylight

With sunset well before 5pm after the clocks change, aim to arrive at each overnight stop in daylight. It's much easier to find your pitch, level the van and check your surroundings when you can actually see them. Short driving days and long walks are the sweet spot for an autumn trip.

A quick autumn packing list

Keep this list handy the night before you leave:

• Waterproofs and a spare set of dry clothes each

• Head torches and a lantern for the living area

• Hot water bottles (they're still the best winter hack going)

• Microfibre cloths for wiping down windows in the morning

• A small dehumidifier bag or two

• Board games or cards for long, dark evenings

• A full gas bottle and topped-up leisure battery
