Make Sure Your Dream Camper Doesn’t Become a Nightmare

Buying a used campervan can be a great way to hit the road sooner and save money. But campervans are complex vehicles—there’s more to check than just the engine. At Sinfin Campervans, we’ve seen it all, and we’re sharing the key things to look out for before you hand over your cash.

1️⃣ Full Service History & Paperwork

Always ask for the full service history and check the V5C logbook matches the seller’s details. Look for evidence of regular maintenance and any past issues. If it’s a converted van, request documentation to confirm the work was done properly.

👉 Red flag: Missing logbook or gaps in service history.

2️⃣ Bodywork & Underside

Campervans are exposed to the elements, so rust can be a hidden danger. Inspect the bodywork and underside for signs of corrosion, especially around wheel arches, sills, and under the van.

👉 Top tip: Even surface rust can hint at deeper problems.

3️⃣ Engine & Mechanical Condition

Take it for a test drive! Listen for unusual noises and check that the engine runs smoothly. Pay attention to gear changes, clutch feel, brakes, and steering.

👉 Check: Oil level and colour, coolant condition, and any leaks.

4️⃣ Conversion Quality

Not all conversions are created equal. Look closely at the quality of fittings—are things solid and well-finished? Shoddy DIY jobs can cause problems later, especially with electrics and gas systems.

👉 Look for: Certified gas/electrical installations and solid craftsmanship.

5️⃣ Electrics & Plumbing

Test every button, switch, and system:

  • Interior lights

  • Water pump

  • Gas hob

  • Fridge

  • Heater (if fitted)

👉 Don’t forget: Plug the van into mains (if possible) to check external hook-up.

6️⃣ Tyres & Suspension

Good tyres are vital for safety. Check for:

  • Tread depth (minimum 1.6mm, but ideally more)

  • Even wear across the tyres

  • Suspension feel (bouncy or sagging could mean trouble)

7️⃣ Legal Weight & Insurance

Check the Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) to ensure the van is within legal weight limits when loaded. Also, confirm the van is correctly registered as a campervan/motor caravan with the DVLA.

👉 Bonus: Ask your insurer what category they require for coverage.
